Duff's Buffalo

Charles Duff was a local farmer and cattleman who raised buffalo when I was a kid. And since I grew up on stories of cowboys and Indians and tales of how important buffalo were, I loved seeing Duff’s buffalo roaming the prairie.  Charles passed away a couple of years ago, but his sons still raise buffalo in the area and graze them north of town, near Scott State Park.  I spotted this old bull while driving on Highway 83.  Seeing him out here, it's easy to visualize how this area must have looked in the pioneer days, or even earlier, when the bison roamed free.

Century Cafe

This cafe and gas station has been abandoned for as long as I can remember.  It was always a landmark during family drives home from Garden City; it meant we were about ten minutes from home.  My aunt Marsha says that the Century Cafe served a great chicken fried steak when it was still in business.
